Today is Friday June 18, 2021. This day was signed into law as a Federal holiday so I had the day off from work at Unicor. Therefore I went outside in the morning and afternoon. In the morning I played pickleball for the second time ever in my life. I think pickleball is my racquet sport. In the afternoon, I just walked around the track with Ryan.
Like most white collar felons here, they do not belong in prison. Ryan told me his whole life story. Afterall, we walked for 2 hours and we see each other everyday. He is here on a 15 year sentence and had everything documented on why he was innocent. Unfortunately because he took his case to trial instead of settling, he was given 15 years instead of 3 years. Literally one gets penalized for going to trial. Not only that, the judge would not allow all the evidence and witnesses to be presented that would have exonerated him. The sytem is unfortunately very broken in the US.
Depsite all these travesties, he also feels he is in prison for a reason to possibly reconnect with God and meet others like myself. I shared with him how my friend Shawn showed me the initial steps to try to get out early from prison under the Cares Act. He had no idea what steps to take so I am paying it forward and assisting him with his initial paperwork to his case manager. Ryan said perhaps he was destined to meet me to help at this moment in his prison sentence as well as grow more in the Bible. He is one of the guys that attends the Bible study with me everyday at 4:30. He wants to grow more and not just be a pew warmer. He is seeking the truth. Certainly sounds like Ryan could be one of my nineveh’s.
When gets out, he also desires to be a proponent in helping at risk people avoid prison. He desires to be an activist for prison reform. Being in prison gives people like Ryan and I a leg up on truly understanding the situation. Hopefully Ryan can get out soon and help change what needs to be changed.
